MANTI—The biblical saga of Joseph of Egypt comes to a Manti stage this month in full and living, well, Technicolor.
Manti LDS First Ward youth will present “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” a musical version of the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors—albeit with added country-western, calypso, bubblegum pop and rock ‘n roll flair—Thursday-Saturday, March 19-21.
John Davidson leads an amateur cast as Joseph, who is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and forced to deal with the complications that result from living in Egypt. Joseph is purchased by Potiphar, and his thwarting the advances of Potiphar’s wife lands him in jail.
Pharaoh, riotously depicted as Elvis, makes Joseph second in command after learning of his ability to interpret dreams. Eventually Joseph’s brothers find themselves begging at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize.
“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” plays nightly at 7:30 p.m., and also at a Saturday matinee performance at 2 p.m. in the cultural hall of the Manti LDS Tabernacle. Bridget Olsen is the director.
